The car

With petrol prices continuing to increase and cars becoming more expensive to run, people are turning to small cars to solve their problems. These cars have gained incredible popularity due to their compact size, cost and fuel efficiency. These cars have contributed in a major way to the modern car industry and almost all of the major manufacturers around the world offer a range of compact vehicles.

The size of the car ranges from 4400mm and 4750mm long for convertibles, 4100mm and 4450mm long for hatchbacks. Small family cars based on sports utility vehicle design range from 4400mm to 4750mm in the international based models and for the U.S. models it is 4200mm to 4500mm. The considerations of compact cars in Japan are under certain conditions and they are as follows: the vehicle needs to be 3.4m long, 1.48m wide, 2m height with an engine capacity of 660cc to 2000cc, 4.7m long, 1.7m wide, and 2m height. There are no special considerations for hatchbacks, minivans, SUVs or CUVs. They run on either diesel or petrol with an engine capacity of 1.5 litres to 2.4 litres, some are 1.3 litres to 1.4 litres units for economy models, within an absolute range of 100 bph and 170 bph.

In the year 1950, the compact class was introduced, built on a 2500mm wheelbase and to it were added hardtops, hatchback and station wagon designs. The compact term was coined by the American motor industry, and is now used all over the world. It was between the 1958 and 1960 when modern compact cars were greatly expanded. During the 1960s small vehicles evolved into slightly smaller versions with 6 cylinder engines, with two-bench six-passenger sedan but were among the smallest in North America.

Consumers today seek vehicles in the U.K. that are fuel efficient as well as fun to drive and for this reason the sale of small cars are at an all time high. Manufacturers are coming up with new ideas and innovative designs in this sector which is proving extremely popular. According to information in 2010 these smaller versions of cars made up about one third of the overall car sales.

Over the next few years, with fuel prices expected to steadily increase even more, the sale of small cars is set to rocket. Not only do small cars save you money in terms of buying them, running them and fuelling them, buy they save a lot of space on the driveway and in the garage.

Car Audio

What's New In The World of Car Audio?

It's fascinating to think about how far and fast car radio technology has evolved. You can't even really just call it "car radio" anymore, because it includes so much more than that.
From the start of the auto era, if anybody knew how to put a home radio into their car it was pretty much the only option. These were usually DIY and tweaked versions of home radios, home stereos, that the typical tinkerer might have come up with. Rarely, if ever, was anything actually included in the initial manufacturing build of those older automobiles any time before the 50s/60s (it is difficult to find an exact date/model car that first shipped with a radio factory installed).
In the 60s there were reel-to-reel players which quickly evolved into 8-track cartridges, which then in turn also quickly evolved into cassette tapes by the late 70s. 1985 saw the first car CD player - now 28 years ago!
After CDs arrived, it became clear that digital was the way to go and we soon saw car technology following the path of the computer system. Many of the same technologies have been used, and the trend of shrinking data down to the smallest phsyical units was very beneficial for car audio as portability was such a primary factor of consideration.
Now, who remembers what a car phone used to look like? A real, true, actual first gen car phone. The really big phones that you had to wire to your car itself. While it's true that car audio equipment of generations past can and does look quite retro, the mobile phone technology we used to have looks absolutely prehistoric. In-car technology has progressed at a lightning rate and if you compare the components from day one against what we have today then you might not even know they performed the same way.
Today we are seeing a merging of these technologies into one unit that controls music, radio, communication, and so much more that we used to never dream about. MP3s have been a fundamental part of car audio for almost two decades. Cell phones are completely integrated thanks to Bluetooth wireless systems. And more and more we are seeing these control units incorporating features and abilities of our computers and smartphones.
The latest generation of controllers created for car travel - controllers such as Sony's MirrorLink or the Clarion Next GATE - include all the popular apps you find everyone using today: Streaming radio, Facebook, Twitter, GPS, and the ability to add more, too. There is so much available to both driver and passenger that never used to be, and it can be right at your fingertips.
There are bright things coming for technology in the future - we see Google developing an automated car, as our information and entertainment consoles only get more and more robust. What will the next couple decades bring?. Or even just the next few years!

Car Accessory

Car Accessory Installations

There are several accessories for cars in the market. Customizing cars have become a trend today. For some it is to add a personal touch to their car and for others just a show-off. The installation of these accessories comes out to be quite expensive so here are a few self to do car accessory installations listed below:
CAR ALARM INSTALLATION:
Opening a car lock or door has become just too easy for anyone. It is possible by just using a normal ruler. This has led to an increase in a lot of car thefts. So it has become important to install alarms in cars for their safety and security.
Car alarm installation is a very mazy and complicated process which requires specific knowledge about working with wires. The accessories you require are sirens, LEDs, door opening protection, adjustable shock sensors, and output for parking flash lights, tilt sensors, air horns, door sensors, trunk, hood and door pins, and starter disable relays. For installation: Firstly, choose a suitable place where you can place your alarm, dash light, siren, reset switch. Then collect materials like solder gun, test light, knife, double sided mounting tape and voltmeter. Now read the installation manual carefully which comes with the alarm. The important things to be careful about are LED positioning, placement of the alarm module and the wiring. If these three are done correctly your alarm will function properly.
CAR STEREO INSTALLATION:
If the car stereo installation professionals charge you a good deal of money then let me tell you that you can do this job all by yourself. It is not as difficult a task as it seems to be. All you need is wire cutters, wire stripper, electrical tape, screw wire set and a new car stereo.
Once you have these you are ready to install your stereo.
Firstly remove the old stereo and disconnect the ground cable from the battery. Now connect the positive and negative terminal of the battery to the positive and negative terminal of the new stereo respectively. The negative wire should be attached to the metal and should be screwed in the dashboard near the radio. Cabling strap has a connector attached to it and all the wires should be connected to it. Now you can attach the negative cable back to the battery and fix your new stereo.
CAR AUDIO INSTALLATION:
Car audio is an important accessory in the car and car security system for an enjoyable ride since most of the people are fond of music. Installation of the car speakers is not a tough job; all you need is a little knowledge and common sense. First of all you need to decide as to where the speakers will be placed. The distance of both the speakers should be at an equal distance from the centre for good quality of voice. Choosing a location for woofers and amplifiers is comparatively easy. Wiring is another important part of the installation; you need to buy a correct cable according to the capacity of the amplifier and speakers. A final fine tuning which can be done with the help of the professionals and your installation is done.

Cool Concept Cars

Automotive companies generally release concept cars every year at numerous car show events. These autos are not for sale but only for display; many are futuristic and utilize outrageous design and incredible technology. Even though many may appear unrealistic; they give us a small peek into the future. Some companies even have contests where university students can submit their ideas and sketches. Building a concept vehicle is a great opportunity for a designer to really let loose and get extremely creative.

Many cars throughout automotive history were actually inspired by concept cars. For example, the General Motors Le Sabre is a concept vehicle that was also designed by Harley Earl in the nineteen fifties. It was used to introduce 12 volt electrics and an eight cylinder engine for General Motors. Concept cars are generally outrageous but some of their more usable features are generally incorporated in autos that are made available to the public.

Did you know that the Corvette was actually inspired by a concept car? The idea came from a concept auto called the Chevrolet Corvair Monza back in the 60's. This may seem a bit crazy nowadays, but Ford actually had a concept vehicle that was based on nuclear power; the Nucleon. We all became familiar with the Pontiac Bonneville as a family car, but the name first appeared on Pontiac's first two-seater concept showcased in 1954 called the Pontiac Bonneville Special. Mini vans are now everywhere but they used to be unheard of back in the seventies; the first mini van was also prototype back in the 70's; it was called the Lancia Megagamma.

Currently the trend appears to be vehicles that can serve more than one purpose. This can be seen in the Bugatti Altess Concept car. What's different about this auto is that it's not only a tourer but also a racer; it combines the best of both worlds. It's almost like a real-life Transformers car; just a few quick fixes and it turns from a tourer to a hot rod!

Many designers are also focusing on cars produced for the city. Many futuristic city cars are made to be super small and efficient. Citroen is showcasing its E-3Pod Antistatic concept, another three-wheel electric car created by a student designer. It seats only the driver who is situated in the third wheel and features two smaller wheels at the front. As you can see, many current cars were actually inspired by concept cars. If you want a glimpse into the future, all you need to do is attend one of the big international auto shows. Who knows, perhaps one of the cars you'll see there might end up becoming a common sight on the roads twenty years from now. You'll never know!

New Toyota Camry Seeks to Hold Off Resurgent Rivals

The Toyota Camry is on top of the automotive world as this five passenger mid-size sedan has been the best selling car in America almost every year since 2000. The current Camry, however, has been bypassed by newer models -- not in sales, but in relevancy. Several models including the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima are newer, offering more content, a competitive price and better gas mileage.

Stiff Competition

With the competition learning how to take on the Toyota Camry and the runner-up Honda Accord, the Camry is at once dated and vulnerable. Though no automaker has the manufacturing capacity to beat Camry, collectively models from the Korean producers, Ford, Chevrolet and others can chip away at sales. For consumers its a win-win environment: today's midsize cars offer outstanding value and are attractive.

Although Toyota needs to update the Camry, the changes are expected to be evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. The Camry's current design is a winner, which means messing with its success could spoil its place on the market.

Hyundai & Kia

Instead, look for Toyota to tweak what it has including presenting an engine-transmission choice that approaches if not rivals the Sonata. The Hyundai Sonata and its cousin, the Kia Optima, have been gobbling up sales as the Sonata raised the bar by delivering 35 mpg highway driving. Moreover, the Sonata Hybrid is a hit, delivering 40 mpg on the highway.

Sneak peek photos of the next generation Camry confirms that the car looks similar to the current generation model, but with some notable Lexus styling cues apparent. Those cues include refined headlamps and grille, updated wheels and new side mirrors. Inside, the Camry may have more options, bringing it closer to the Avalon in appointments, a model which is the closest thing to a Lexus that Toyota sells.

New Models

Just as soon as Toyota updates the Camry, other competitors are expected to roll out new vehicles too. Beginning in January 2012, GM is expected to introduce the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and later that year the next generation Ford Fusion will hit the market and with an optional lithium-ion battery pack hybrid model following.

Perhaps the most significant new competitor for the Toyota Camry will be the all new 2012 Volkswagen Passat, a model currently being built in Tennessee and hitting showrooms later this summer. The Passat is larger and cheaper than the outgoing model, giving VW the right model to take on all comers, including Toyota.

A Review Of The 2012 Nissan Versa

The economy is still tough and many people are having difficulty making ends meet, let alone have the money to buy a new car. In times like these consumers place a high premium on value and that's where the Nissan Versa delivers. It is by far one of the most affordable small vehicles on the market and starts at just around $10k. The interior offers enough room to seat five adults. A sportier looking hatchback version is available at an additional cost. Competitors of the Versa in the affordable compact niche include the Kia Soul, Kia Forte and Honda Fit.

Appearance wise, the Versa is clean and simple looking and focused more on utility and function than form. Fifteen inch wheels are available as well as multi-reflector halogen headlights. Performance for the Versa is more than adequate; consumers aren't expecting a hot rod or high performance hot rod given the extremely low price. Handling is smooth and efficient while parking is a breeze due to the Versa's compact size. The base engine is a four cylinder 1.6 engine with a 107 hp while the mid level trim sports a 1.8 Liter engine. A Continuously Variable Transmission is available which offers mileage of 38 mpg on the highway.

Despite its affordable cost, the Versa offers a high quality cabin and comfortable seats. The upper level trim even comes with materials that are soft to the touch. The trunk offers a generous amount of space at 13.8 cubic feet. The 2012 model comes standard with a stereo system; a feature that was only available as an option on the 2011 version. Additional standard features include AC, a trip computer, cup holders, brake assist, ABS and a tilting steering column. The Versa boasts the most legroom in its class.

Drawbacks to the car are that it's traditional and old fashioned when it comes to technology. The windows need to be adjusted manually (no power windows are available) and the seats also need to be adjusted manually. Options such as Bluetooth and a navigation system are available at an additional cost but it will raise the price quite a bit. Despite its small stature, the Versa is big when it comes to driver and passenger safety. Standard safety features include traction control, an air bag system with a total of six bags, a tire pressure monitoring system and a LATCH system in order to secure child seats.

If you are looking to save money and want to purchase an economical car then the Versa definitely delivers when it comes to value. On top of that, gas mileage is quite good which adds to even more savings down the line. Retail price for the base model is set at $10,990

Honda Customers Seeing A Whole New Generation Of Vehicles

If you have been following what's going on in the news these days, it's easy to see that a lot of great things have been happening for Honda customers. It seems like Honda has been quite busy lately thinking up new ways to introduce some new high volume vehicles. For people who were looking for more fuel efficency, the Honda Fit was introduced to North American not that long ago. This was Honda's way of providing city dwellers with a fuel efficient commuter that also has plenty of cargo space.

With the arrival of the all-new 2008 Accord, there is cause for celebration. If we Look at the all new redesigned vehicle, we see that it is a very practical and unassuming car. For more than three decades, we baby boomers have matured, along with the Honda Accord. This shows us that these latest Hondas prove that maturity can also mean excellence. Equipped with a V6 engine, six-speed manual transmission, and plenty of extras the Accord actually becomes fun to drive.

With the introduction of the all new CR-Z concept car, Honda is pushing the limits on bringing true sport and the latest technology together. This new breed of vejicle is poised to set Honda apart from it's competitors in the Hybrid market. Honda calls the CR-Z a lightweight sports car, indicating that it will have the performance to backup its sporty looks. The interior design of the CR-Z has the look and feel of a Hi-tech and Sporty vehicle, which has been achieved by a very futuristic instrument panel. Honda also designed the interior to seem very airy and spacious by using mesh material on a simple framework.

Next we see the Honda SUT Concept which is a next-generation truck concept that takes a clean slate approach to the light-duty truck segment. It combines a roomy and practical SUV-style interior and a pickup-style cargo bed with traditional Honda strengths. This includes refined styling, superior ergonomics, innovative design and world-class build quality.

The truck market is evolving to meet the changing tastes of a new generation of truck buyers, so the Honda SUT Concept takes this evolution to the next level with higher levels of refinement and sophistication in a sporty and socially responsible package with Honda durability, quality and reliability.

And finally, Honda has recently confirmed it's plans to bring the exciting "green" cars into production. The FCX hydrogen fuel cell car and a lightweight, hybrid sportscar will both be built - with a production version of the FCX making its debut next month. ear And next, based on the FCX concept, the all-new FCV will be marketed to fleet and retail customers in both the U.S. and Japan. The Honda FCV will provide all the creature comforts and safety most expect while the undisclosed specifications of the Honda V Flow fuel cell stack will provide performance equivalent to most modern day sedans while producing zero emissions other than water and heat.

5 Automotive Tools Every Auto Owner Needs

Automobiles are sizeable investments. As a car becomes older, its maintenance becomes increasingly important. There are many tools that every auto owner should have. Auto shops can sometimes charge exurbanite amounts for a simple fix that could have been done at home for much cheaper. Having the proper tools and knowledge will allow any auto owner to save money, learn more about their automobile, and maintain their car.

1. Every auto owner should have a jack and jack stands. When working on a car, more often than not, the car must be elevated. Simple procedures like rotating tires can be done at home with the help of a Jack. Additionally, all car owners should have a jack in their car with them wherever they go. In the unfortunate event of a flat tire, having a jack and a spare tire can lead to a simple tire replacement. In a garage, having a powerful jack and strong jack stands makes it possible for an auto owner to reach every point underneath the car and thus solve problems more efficiently.

2. One of the most important car maintenance practices is the oil change. To maintain an automobile, the oil should be changed once every 3,000 miles. Quintessential to a successful oil change is having an Oil Wrench that takes the oil filter off and allows the oil to be changed expediently. Without an oil wrench, an auto owner may be forced to take their car to an auto shop and overpay for a simple oil change.

3. Often when dealing with parts of the engine, or the hard-to-reach spots under the hood, proper tools are required. A 3/8-inch Socket Set can allow an automobile owner to loosen and subsequently tighten a wide variety of bolts. Different extensions allow the auto owner to obtain the best angles for torque and therefore make auto jobs quite a bit easier.

4. When changing oil, having a funnel, some rags, and a bucket is very helpful. Once again, the oil change is one of the most important maintenances for a car, and it can be done easily by anyone. However, many people do not have the proper tools or knowledge for a successful oil change. Having a funnel can also be useful when refilling any other fluids in one’s car. The funnel serves to make sure that fluids do not get over filled, which can lead to significant problems.

5. Finally, every auto owner should have a pair of solid vice grips. Some times a part will just not come loose. Other times, a car part may not seem to be tight enough despite one’s best efforts. Vice grips can hold a wide variety of car parts and allow the user to obtain more leverage for either tightening or loosening a part. When encountering a part that will simply not come loose, many auto owners will give up and take their car to a shop. Having vice grips can help one to avoid this problem.

10 Commandments of Defensive Driving

10 Commandments of Defensive Driving:

1. Be attentive

Always pay attention. Always check your side mirrors and look far enough to see other cars not just the one in front of you. Be alert when you are near intersections and pay attention to road signals and signs. If the sign tells you it's slippery when wet, don't speed up or else... Pay attention to fast cars because you'll never know if the person driving is drunk or not.

2. Yield and give way.

Yep, you are on the right way and what you are doing is just fine. But if you see one car which is running way too fast it's wiser to give way. Because if you get hit, you may end up dead or injured, too. It pays to be forgiving and calm when you are on the road just to increase your chances of not getting hurt or killed.

3. Don't trust the other driver.

The third rule is another cardinal rule - don't trust the other driver. Because you'll never really know whether the other driver is cautious or not, it's better to pay attention and be alert at all times.

4. No alcohol, please!

Plain and simple don't drive when you're drunk! You need not ask the reason because that's plain common sense and it will not take an Einstein to realize how dangerous it is to drive while one is drunk. Defensive driving is being clean from intoxicating substances.

5. Buckle up for safety.

Yeah, that's right buckle up for safety. Use your seatbelt. Don't worry about your pants or shirt being slightly folded when you wear seatbelt because at least you can do something to fix it because you are still alive. But if you are dead, you'll never really know the difference between a well-pressed and a not so well-pressed shirt.

6. Wear helmet.

For motorists, always make sure that you wear your helmets on because experiences of many people will tell you how many lives were already saved by the mere act of wearing helmets. Defensive driving also means wearing your gears.

7. Never beat the red light.

Simply put, if you try beating the red light for sure you are going to give yourself a headache if are caught doing it. So, as a piece of advice don't.

8. Be cool.

If someone overtakes or somebody honks... be cool. It's not the end of the world anyway. Being defensive is always better.

9. Use signals.

Use your flashers and lights properly to relay your intentions. When you will be turning left it is not hard to turn on the left signal light to alert the other driver.

10. Never Play Chicken with a Train!

If you are in the Hamlet like "to be or not to be" situation, just don't if the train is coming. A few minutes of waiting is better than not being able to experience the next minute anymore. Defensive driving is all about being patient.

Cars That Run on Water - Fact or Fiction

Does the idea of cars that run on water sound preposterous to you? Is it hard to imagine that you can increase your car's fuel efficiency by more than 100 percent just by using a water fuel cell?

The fact is an amazing new technology has been developed to allow cars to use water to maximize fuel efficiency. This new invention is so cost-effective; scientists aren't even willing to share it with the public. They would make no profit from the product, and their expensive fuel research would be stopped almost immediately!

You may be wondering exactly what kind of cars could run on water. The answer will surprise you. With the use of a converter, any engine can use water to improve fuel efficiency. These inventions can be added both to diesel and to gasoline engines.

To say that the car actually runs on water is slightly misleading. In fact, the car runs on a combination of water and gasoline. The water is available in a quart-sized container filled with water and a small amount of baking soda that is installed beneath the hood. A vacuum diverts the fuel exhaust back into the water.

A tiny charge of electricity is supplied to this water through a connection to the battery. The electrical current splits the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then directed to the motor's carburetor, and the vehicle is then supplied with hydrogenated exhaust fuel, which makes the fuel burn more completely.

Although you may have read about the possibilities of hydrogen power, this power is actually very dirty to produce. In addition, the process is risky; hydrogen in this form is potentially very explosive. Between the risk and the pollution, this type of hydrogen power is actually a worse alternative to fuel.

In contrast, cars that run on water can manufacture their own hydrogen power, as it is required by the car. Virtually no risk is involved. In addition, the engine exhaust is much cleaner than that of a standard engine because the fuel is burned more thoroughly. In fact, the primary end product of this fuel source is water!

Cars that run on water will save you thousands of dollars each year. Take a few moments to read about the technology, before you make the decision that will put the money you have been giving to major fuel companies back in your pocket!

4 Simple Steps Before Buying Your Honda

There are 4 simple but very effective steps that you need to do before you want to buy your new Honda car. These things are very important so that you will buy your new Honda cars with peace in mind and save a lot of money.

Step 1:

Firstly, You should check publications at a library or bookstore or on the Internet that discuss new car features and prices. These may provide information on the dealer's costs for specific models and options. Once you have a general idea of the type of vehicle that will suit you, spend the time to do the background work that will disclose advantages and disadvantages. Several Internet sites can help you compare features and prices on new motor vehicles.

Step 2:

Second, You should find out the dealer's real cost on the car (it's typically less than invoice) and the prices that smart shoppers are paying for that car, then research any other items you might want (loans, extended warranties, car alarms, etc.).

Here's the real key to your deal: you must find out what the dealer paid for the car so you can negotiate the price you'll pay for it. You have to find out this information for yourself and you have to be sure it's up-to-date and correct!

Step 3:

Thirdly, There are other good times to buy. September and October are the usual times that new car models arrive, however new models are starting to be released year-round. Saturday mornings are good because a dealership is trying to create some momentum going into the weekend.

Also, when the end of the month is coming up, car dealers will want to boost sales figures for monthly reports, so good deals may be found then as well.

Step 4:

Lastly, everything is negotiable. The price, the trade value, the interest rate, the extended warranty - most dealerships will work with you on everything that you want to work on.

Remember, you have the power. You're the buyer. You can walk out on a deal at any time prior to signing the papers and driving away.

Auctions are held to sell the cars and may be purchased offline as well as online.

The savings you experience can actually run up to the thousands. These auctions offer a wide variety of cars, makes, models and years. All of these type of sites offer valuable information about each one and becomes a virtual online mall for car shopping for men, women and teens. Some teens have been able to convince their parents to purchase their new car in just such a manner since the cars are greatly reduced.

One must do their due diligence, however, especially to check out the car's VIN or Vehicle Identification Number to ensure the car has not been previously involved in a auto accident such as you yourself just experienced since it may have sustained heavy body damage which could lead to future problems.

If you are a young person, it is best to take an older, more experienced individual with you to purchase your new auto. Friends are great and wonderful support, but older adults have purchased vehicles for years and know the pitfalls of buying a new or used car. So, take a trusted source of autos with you, ask a lot of questions, and pick out a new vehicle that will last you for a few years. After an auto accident, if your car is completely totalled, is a good time to take stock of what you really need in a car.

There are two basic ways to buy a used car cheap, and one good reason: To save money. It isn't just that they cost less to buy initially. The research shows a four-year-old car can cost 40% less over its lifetime. That's including the costs of gas, oil, repairs, insurance - everything. This is why almost half of the millionaires in the United States buy used cars, according to Thomas Stanley and William Danko, authors of "The Millionaire Next Door."

Buy The Right Used Car

The first approach to buying a used car for less is to look for the cheapest "type" of car for your purposes. Some cars just cost more than others, both to buy and to operate, so look for the lowest-cost one that will do what you need. In other words, whatever your negotiating skill, a four-year-old Jeep Wrangler is still going to cost more to buy and run than a four-year-old Ford Escort. So if you don't need the four-wheel drive or space of the former, consider the latter.

Here are some of the factors to consider when looking at the overall cost of a vehicle:

- Price. You can look in one of the popular auto "blue-books" or price guides to see what used cars are selling for. The accuracy of these may be suspect, but they do give you a good idea of the relative values, so you can compare various models.

- Repair costs. At a public library you can find a copy of the Consumer Reports auto edition. They have ratings for all the major systems and parts of different models, and usually an average annual repair cost for them as well.

- Mileage. You can ask an owner about the mileage he or she gets, and try to gauge their honesty. Alternately, there are websites like fueleconomy.gov where you can find fuel economy figures for used cars. If you drive 20,000 miles per year, the difference between 20 miles-per-gallon versus 34 MPG is an extra 412 gallons per year, or $1,240 at $3 per gallon.

- Insurance. Some cars cost more to insure. Ask your insurance agent about the cars you are considering, to see if there is a big difference in costs.

- Resale value. If you intend to drive the car for just a few years, you have to consider what you will lose in value. Two cars may cost $8,000 each used, but one may be worth $6,000 a couple years later while the other is only worth $4,000. You can research resale value online, or study a used-car price guide to see which models have retained the most value over the years.

Get The Right Price

The second part of buying a used car for less is to negotiate a lower price. You don't have to be a master negotiator to do well, but there are a few tricks you should know. The first is to have a good idea of what the car is worth. Get out that car price guide, and look for the wholesale cost. Make your first offer lower than that. What else can you do?

- Spend some time looking at the car. If you are interested, spend some time with a car and owner or sales person. Negotiator refer to this as "time investment." The more time the seller has invested with you, the more they want to sell to you, so as not to "waste" that time. It has been shown that you can get a lower offer accepted if you first take more of the sellers time.

- Hint at the problems. Look at the engine and under the car, even if you aren't sure what you are looking at. Point out any problems you see politely, but never contradict or insult the seller in any way. You want the seller to like you but start to doubt the value of his car.

- Be ready to walk away. Unless you really need a car today, always be ready to say, "I'll think about it," and leave. This is one of the oldest and surest ways to get price concessions. Sales people in particular know that when people "think about it" they rarely return. They will usually make their best offer at this point.

- Have a mechanic look at the car. If you can't bring the car to your mechanic, have a friend with some mechanical knowledge come with you to look at the car. It isn't necessarily cheap if it breaks down a week after you buy it. Also, everything that your friend or mechanic finds wrong is a negotiating point that may result in a lower price.
